How I approach therapy?

In working with people that have suffered and continue to suffer from painful symptoms related to mood disorders, substance abuse/dependency and trauma issues, I have realized how important it is for that person to learn not only positive coping skills to manage depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorders but also to become the expert on their own needs, care and experience. When people whose painful symptoms relate to unresolved trauma issues both past and present become aware of the origin of their negative core beliefs then realize that they do have the power and ability to eliminate them now, it is truly life-changing. When one person’s life changes positively, it affects how they parent their children and treat others. This positive parenting can lead to generational change, as well as, social change.

I find that the combination Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) offer effective relief for both present and past suffering. EMDR helps to release the traumatic memories so the person can process them normally. With EMDR, the person will be able to remember the event but without the pain and emotion. Then by using CBT and interactive coaching techniques, the person’s ability to improve, create and sustain the positive life changes he/she has made both personally and relationally will become a reality. This whole process does not need to be painful and ponderous but instead is done in an atmosphere of caring, thoughtfulness and humor. The timing varies according to the client’s needs and preparation.
